Library

FUNCTION

The library department is responsible for provision of Library and Information services, and provision and coordination of research services

LIBRARY

The library is the parliamentary depository for all papers laid at table, the hansards and other official material from commiittees and the house. The main function of the library include collection development, processing and reference and circulation services.

A wide range of collection including monographs, Parliamentary proceedings, Government reports, Guidebooks, Encyclopedias, Yearbooks, newspapers and other relevant documents are available for reference within the library. Borrowing of books for use outside the library is not allowed.

The library operates an open Access arrangement to facilitate users to browse and pick documents. Any queries can be addressed to the library staff at the Front Desk.  A photocopying  machine is available  in the Library for copying articles from publications. Only parts of publications may be photocopied and not whole books.  This service is exclusively reserved for documents retrieved or generated from the department.

 

Parliamentary Research Services

Functions of Parliamentary research services (PRS) include:

  1. Analysis of policies and bills.
  2. Assisting Parliament  to monitor and evaluate government programs.
  3. Assisting Parliament to ensure that Government is held accountable for its activities.
  4. Conducting Legislative research.

Research staff who are specialists in different fields provide impartial and confidential research services in response to requests from Members and Committees of Parliament, and assist Committees of Parliament with investigations.

 

Research requests, which must be related to Parliamentary business, include bill summaries, issue briefs and fact sheets as well as giving detailed research reports using data from primary and secondary sources.

 

The department carries out primary research on outstanding issues in anticipation of Members' needs and Monitoring and Evaluation of Government Programs. The reports can be obtained from the Library and on the Intranet.

 

Requests for research are made on a job request form obtainable from the department and forwarded to the Assistant Director, Research Services.

SSLA is situated in Juba - South Sudan adjustent to the ministries complex.
